How excited are you about Opera mini for iPhone?
Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
Since I live across the street from Opera Software's main offices, I got really excited when I heard that their Opera Mini browser might be available for the iPhone. Up to 6 times faster load times on large pages, up to 90% less data transfer? Bring it on. Only question that remains for me is how much of web scripts, etc. that will be rendered properly.
I did use Opera as my main browser on My mac a couple of years ago, but lately its become so large and full of features that it's outgrown my needs. Now I make do with Safari, and Firefox whenever Safari fails. However, the Opera Mini browser must not be confused with the main version of Opera, nor with the Opera Mobile available for Windows Mobile. It's much faster, but it also has less supported features. I think it'll be great to have for the iPhone. What do you think?
EDIT: Demonstration video, complete with politically correct promotion speak:

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
i have tried opera mini before with past versions on my blackberry and have been always pleased with its speed but it never seemed to be as compatible as the blackberry browser when it comes to rendering complex pages and scripts. if they fix that and keep the speed might be a very good app for any mobile geek
edit:just found the beta link ... time to test
well so much for that ...
being that i recently upgraded to the super fast BB OS 5.0 i will have to play the waiting game

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
You need a poll option for "I don't own an iPhone but I'm all for it."
I'm not a great fan of Opera per se but their solution to mobile bandwidth limitations and Apple's runtime constraints is ingenious. I don't think it would hurt Apple's reputation or their revenue to let Opera join the party.
Funny you should mention "making do" with Safari on the desktop, I've found it to be just right for me. It does everything I want it to, nothing I don't want it to (well, there's the recent addition of that Top Sites nonsense) and it's generally a silky experience.

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
I'm using Opera as my main desktop browser since 2000, I was one of the few people who actually bought a licence for version 4.
Now we're at version 10 and I still prefer it to the other browsers around, even if I occasionally use Safari and Firefox when Opera doesn't play along.
I like the features that I'm using in the desktop version, the stuff I don't need I just don't look at.
All that is to say that I'm very biased....
I'm using Opera Mini since, well, maybe 5 years on the mobile phone, basically since version 1 onwards. I started using Mini because at that time I didn't have an unlimited data plan and because Nokia browsers suck big time on both S40 and S60 devices.
The rendering speed and the low amount of data still convince me today, even at times with 3G network and and a data plan. In fact, most of the time I set the phone to use EDGE, as this draws way less power than 3G. With the accelerated page rendering thanks to Opera's servers I don't feel a difference on the pages I read regularly on the phone.
Since a couple of weeks, version 5 of Opera Mini and version 10 of Opera Mobile are out. I use both on my Nokia, depending on the websites. Opera Mobile is more of a full scale (mobile) browser, comparable with iPhone's Safari and way more powerful than the build-in browsers in Nokia's phones. Still, Opera Mobile can also use the compression technology first implemented in the Mini browser.
Opera Mobile and Mini allow you to link your bookmarks to a user account, which also includes syncing with your desktop browser (I like that a lot). I guess you can do similar things with the iPhone's browser now. But as with a lot of things, we Opera users know that we were first to have these features (mouse gestures or tabbed browsing anybody?).
As for playing flash or other media... well, that is not Opera's strength on mobile devices I think. It relies on build-in media players (flash player etc) to do that.
Anyway, I hope that Apple gives its OK to allow Opera Mini or Mobile on the iPhone, even if I don't have one (yet).

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
as far as i understood the concept of opera mini correctly, opera is faster because complex content is not loaded or it is compressed/simplified by opera servers.leoantix wrote:i have tried opera mini before with past versions on my blackberry and have been always pleased with its speed but it never seemed to be as compatible as the blackberry browser when it comes to rendering complex pages and scripts. if they fix that and keep the speed might be a very good app for any mobile geek

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
Yes, complex content is rendered on Opera's servers and then re-packaged in a binary markup language that is both bandwidth-savvy and easy to render on mobile devices. No video content, though.

Today I tried out Opera Mini running on the iPhone, and it kicks Safari’s butt. The folks at Opera have a native version of their browser running on the iPhone, and while there are limits due to the way it is built, for sheer speed of browsing, it has Safari beat.

That's actually where I am as well, and I wrote the poll options...djpimley wrote:You need a poll option for "I don't own an iPhone but I'm all for it."
More browser options, especially those using other rendering engines than WebKit, is better for the iPhone consumers and healthier for the iPhone platform in general.

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
Now for a speed comparison between Opera mini and Safari on an iPhone:
I'm guessing the speed difference is significantly smaller on 3G and faster networks, but then 2G gives you better battery life.

Very impressive, not just the speed but also the interface. Looks like they might have beat Apple at the UI game on Apple's home turf.

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
finally got a supported version running on my bb storm and hands down it is the fastest mobile web browser on any phone so far that i have seen. its just simply amazing how fast it loads ... only one quirk with my touchscreen it thinks my hovered actions are clicks ... there is always a price for free
Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
Just loaded it off the App Store. Going to try it right now!

As much as i like the speed and usability of opera on the iphone...

Big Brother doesn't live in Norway, I can assure you of that. You should read up on Google Analytics; if you don't like the idea of giving up your privacy to Opera then Google Analytics will make your head will spin so much, you'll never use the web again.alphonse wrote:big brother is watching you - and i can not yet life with it.

Re: Opera Mini 5 for iPhone
Well, as a first verdict from my end... The concept and low file size (only 1004 kb!) are pretty nice, but it still has quite a few teething problems.
For instance, zooming in doesn't work very well on my end (the browser keeps mistaking it for scrolling for most of the time), and some settings are seriously difficult and a little annoying to control, eg removing favorites. If you don't take your finger off the symbol at exactly the right time you will see the menu for a short moment - and then Opera will open the website.
For the moment Safari will remain my browser of choice on the iPod, but I'm hoping for a bug fix.
