iPhone Users in the United Kingdom
OK, I'm thinking of buying an iPhone, but I need more info. I am currently living in the U.S., but will be moving to the U.K. soon. Do I need to have a contract with some British network, or is there a pay-as-you-go deal?

Re: iPhone Users in the United Kingdom
Would I be able to buy an iPhone here in the states, then get a U.K. sim card? Or is that not allowed.
Re: iPhone Users in the United Kingdom
Don't know is the short answer.
Almost every street market anywhere will have a stall with a laptop for unlocking mobiles (about £5 or £10 a go) and I guess that the phone itself is the same in the UK or US. But I'm no expert on it!

Don't know is the short answer, too.
Unlocking it sould work.
from the technical point of view, the i phone is a quadband (GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)), which means you can use it in europa and in the us.
hope, somebody is not so unknowing and has a decent answer.
You surely need a provider in the country you use the iphone. the roaming would bring a burden to your budget.
here in switzerland, iphones are sold only with contracts (officially).

Re: iPhone Users in the United Kingdom
I recommend you to buy the iPhone in the UK, otherwise you have to hack your iPhone. Look at this:
http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone
2 possibilities: You dont do much phonecalls: Pay and Go otherwise chose monthly pay.
Another possibility would be to buy it in another country, for example Italy or Belgium (costs like 800$) and you can use any network. Maybe Don will send you one

Re: iPhone Users in the United Kingdom
Thanks for all the help and advice guys, but unfortunately, doing some more research on O2 I have come to realize an iPhone is just a dream since my budget is about $200. I do already have a phone and iPod, so really I was hoping to be able to combine those. Buuuuuut, since the iPod Touch does almost everything that the iPhone does, (with no extra phone-related plans that suck your money from you like water through a big straw) the iPod Touch will have to do.
And yes, I probably will read and play games on it. I don't really care whether it is a screen or page. It's getting info into my brain. That's the end.

With WiFi, VoIP is a possibilty

You can probably look forward to things like Skype on the iPod touch in the future. And Apple did say they have a new set of headphones with a built-in mic in the cord... sounds perfect for making VoIP calls to me!
Good luck!

...even if it may be illegal (in some jurisdictions)
Protectionists Dorks
Googling iphone and voip turns up several apps, though, so it should be easy enough to find one that hasn't been ruled against wherever you happen to be. I'm not even a cell user and this ruling has my back up, no matter if it can be applied to all carriers or one, it's total BS. I'm sure one judge just got a hefty raise!

Re: iPhone Users in the United Kingdom
Apple said they would not be against such apps being developed. That is probably since they gave up points on voice contracts
