Re: hot "spot"
Here's a couple from my recent trip to Arizona, an early model (1956?) Triumph TR3, and a classic 1964 Porsche 356 SC. Both in fantastic condition, spotted within 30 minutes of each other in Payson. Maybe just chance, but probably some kind of antique car gathering nearby.

Wow, what a pair of littles beauties. I remember calling the TR3s "frog cars" when I saw them as a kid.

Some nice vintage photos from the 1950's, Ferrari prepping for a Monaco race.
Also, I'm curious if anyone here likes Speedway. I have a serious jones for it, fortunately I'm too old to get into it.

Re: hot "spot"
More like this Kenners. You being American and all, I would be surprised if you were aware of this type of racing. About the only place in the US that Speedway happens in Los Angeles area of California. Oddly enough though there have been more than one American Speedway World Champions. But it really is a European thing.
I've always been interested in it, but had no access to the race vids until some of my friends helped me out.

An amazing oooold FIAT... But which model? Incredible how this car is still looking modern!
Re: hot "spot"
Oh wow, visibility for the driver must be incredible, 360 degrees almost without interruption! I guess that's one of the benefits of zero crash resistance in the A and B pillars.

Mercedes SLK R172 Update to Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
I need some help here guys.
I have a client that owns a Mercedes SLK R172, that has been promising for a few months to show to me. The Pebble Beach Concours is in Monterey this weekend, so he brought the heap down.
He is going to show it to me tomorrow morning, that will be nice. But I am also hoping for two other possibilities. 1. He takes me for a quick ride (by quick, I don't mean short). 2. He lets me drive it. Not likely, but one never knows do one.
Here's where you all come in. To be honest I'm not much of a high end car guy. I've favored motorbikes from the beginning. I live by the rule that says, to have the best bike possible, don't waste money on cars. So when Werner and I talk, what should I say that will impress on him my awareness of what he is presenting to me, so that he might deign to let me get behind the wheel of his $200,000 to $350,000 ride.
I am an old mechanic, I know motors well enough, but I'm sure this thing of his has many cool things on it
that I should get him to show me.

Re: hot "spot"
SLK R172? They just launched that thing. Regarding the price... yer a bit high with that, it's Merc's entry level roadster/open roof cruiser. The biggest engine available at the moment is a 3.5 liter V6 producing roughly 300 hp, with a 420 hp AMG model (naturally aspirated 5.5 liter V8 based on the new AMG twin turbo powerplants) to follow in winter.

Re: hot "spot"
Like I said, I don't know much about these things. It's the safety car at Formula 1 races. Possibly this: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
I'll know tomorrow. Maybe a little video and a sound file.

tell him about LOL forum and the digital petrol heads that live there, and that we only believe you if he shoots a video of you behind the wheel and you going 100 mph in 2nd gear
Re: hot "spot"
Was a very nice Gullwing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG 6.5 liter, 570HP 200MPH+. Guess it's the entry level of this model though. I suspect the one they use at F1 races is the 8 liter version. I did not get to drive it but we did putt around the neighborhood in it. Build quality on this was really really good. I have never seen body panels so perfectly aligned. I hate to think what a set of tires for this beast goes for, look like they have plenty of grip.
I actually saw two more of these cars while sitting in the worst traffic I have ever seen here in Monterey. The people that come to the Concours tend to have their Ferrari's Lambos' etc etc trucked in and then tool around town in them. There must be a thousand full size car transports here. I can say one thing for sure, the fucking rich are not struggling (yet). A London type riot here would be very special indeed.
Also saw a Veyron today. Meh, kind of a silly car really.

Re: hot "spot"
Nice one. Didn't know there exists an 8l though...
I was once sitting at a T junction in Monaco (on the bottom leg of the T) and I heard a car approaching from the right. The exhaust note said: big, loud, mean. I thought I've already heard that engine somewhere, but not in real life (we only have 4 pot diesels around here...). And then it came into view and was gone a second later: a Mercedes SLS. I knew the engine growl from the F1 safety car... And my diesel meanwhile made brrrrrr.... Kinda frustrating.

Re: hot "spot"
I don't know for sure if there is a larger engine, but the owner of the 6.5 said there is one.
I tried make a sound recording using an iphone, but as soon as he blipped the throttle the audio clipped. And it generally did not give the sound of the actual exhaust note.
He also told me he is selling his house and would throw the car in if someone gives him what he wants for it.
I tell you, the rich live on another planet. It's a pretty nice house.
