Is there a birds nest in my Mac?
Mac Pro 2008 is making very strange noises, all the time, i dont know if it is a fan or a hard drive. I thought, before i start to replace the hard drives, maybe one of you recognises this noise. Possible sources: System Hard drive, GPU or CPU fan. Except for the noise, the system is running smooth.
Thx for the help

I can't hear it very clearly, but the most likely thing for noises like that is a fan. I'd open that baby up and first of all see if there's some dust/hair you can clear out of various air intakes etc.
Does the sound seem to come on immediately, any changes with temperature on any of the sensors?

Like on a car or motorbike with a possible water pump or alternator failure, you might try a ruler or measuring stick (something light and made of plastic or wood, and not conductive). Touch it to a hard drive case or a fan housing and put the other end against your ear. If it has a bad bearing you will hear it.

Re: Is there a birds nest in my Mac?
This sounds definitely like a fan noise. Maybe some mechanic failure, most probably just dust on the fan.
Clean it (outside with some air pressure) and try again.
You can open the mac without any harm and start it up. listen well and find the source of the noise.
maybe some paper or something stuck.
should not be a real issue imo...

I have the same noise, it's definitely a fan. And so I have opened my mac, damaged the internal microphone wire, cleaned it all, the noise is still there, but no microphone...lol

Re: Is there a birds nest in my Mac?
Thx alot for the help, I located the problem now, its the fan behind the DVD-Drive, but cleaning with a vacuum cleaner doesnt help. I managed to remove the DVD drive (which is very easy) but i cant remove the cover of the fan and i couldnt find a manual for it. Im gonna get some canned air next week, that might help.
