Re: I've been cheating on you
good choice DANDY, I had a chance to play rFactor in past on a friend of mine piccì. Was also a game I compared Redline with, cause has better graphics, better multiplayer support, improved physics and is cheaper.
But has something in will never like. Windows OS. I don't think Aspyr/Feral/MacSoft will ever get involved in porting, cause rFactor is a sort of "community" project. Just like Racer.
We can hope about a Mac porting directly from the developers. Just think how could be fun to move out all our "stuffs" on that game...
But, is it possible?
For sure, I will not move to rFactor if i will not have "my" community

Indeed, Windoz is truly awful. Nothing more to add there. All I can do to make it feel homey is put the taskbar at the top, My Comp in the top right, Recycle Bin...you got it...bottom right.
Our cars' basic models could be used, with some additional work to them, as there is a damage model, parts that fly off in crashes, multiple sounds, and the coding probably takes much longer. Many of our cars are already represented, and look stunning.
The game is already aging, but still has a huge user base, typically divided into leagues. We could try to petition ISI (the publisher) for a mac port, though the hope is very dim.
**Just saw some info regarding rFactor 2, coming relatively soon...

MBP 2.3 CoreDuo, 2G RAM, ATI X1600 (256MB) video....runs very well with some graphic option tweaks, even at 4X anistropic. I recommend a 30G partition, some of the mods (plugins) are enormous.

I wouldn't install Win -haha- dows just for a game. There are about 10% Mac users around - I don't believe the game will be ported.
Redline is realistic but simple - or simple but realistic. Realsim - Simplistic.

I'm quite curious about the car .ini files. Can you post a car configuration file here? Also, what you mean about crash model? They model the body in separate meshes, or they model also the damaged meshes?
About porting, try to get in contact with them, should be interesting to have a crossplatform for rFactor 2.

Macbook pro dual 1.83 here. Graphics are as smooth, without me tweaking anything.

I'd say they damage separate damage meshes, some are better than others.
The configs are split into 35+ files, so, if interested, I'd suggest downloading one for inspection.

Probably the topmost reason I don't expect to see most RL racers on the other side. I fully understand how installing a M$ OS on a Mac is a horrifying prospect for some people.

Re: I've been cheating on you
Hope you are having fun over there!
The wife keeps XP in regular use for her warcrafting, so one day I might get round to trying it. I don't hold out much hope for my Mini being able to play it very well though!
The other decent alternative is Vdrift. Completley open source, OS X native, but doesn't yet have multiplayer. However they have just finished a major rewrite and are having a poll on what should be added next. Once it gets some online features I would expect it to show a huge rise in popularity.

Anyone try rFactor in Crossover?
When the Mac Pro arrives I'll be giving Left4Dead and Red Orchestra a whirl in Crossover.

This is CrossOver. Amazing what a 10 second Google search can do, eh?

It's a commercialised version of WINE, the long-time Windows translation layer for Linux (remember folks, Wine Is Not an Emulator.) It will fool Windows games and application into running on foreign systems, by providing translation layers for all the services (DLLs, DirectX, DirectSound etc.) that they would expect to be present on a Windows box.

cool it on the sarcasm please. I was being social and did not feel like being a detective.
Ok, so crossover... why? any layer of translation would surely affect performance. I could not get it to work with parallel. It works perfectly using bootcamp.

Just for you, babe.
See Flat wrote:

The thing with CrossOver is, you run the game from the Finder and it runs in an OS X native window (or fullscreen.) When you're done playing, you quit back to the desktop, or you do what many of us do while waiting in the MP lobby: check your email, browse the web, arrange our desktop items to form rude words. The translation layer simply translates a DirectX call to an OpenGL call, a DirectSound call to a CoreAudio call. The overhead is actually very minimal because no emulation of complex environments is being done. Not every application or game works, due to oddities in the programming or (would you believe it?) buggy Microsoft OS behaviour.
Oh, I forgot: you also won't need to buy a copy of XP/Vista... you are buying these Windows installs, aren't y'all?

Did you actually try to buy a stand-alone copy of XP without a PC attached to it? I find it very difficult to find a full version which does not require a previous version for installation/upgrade.
I'm asking because I might need this for professional reasons (all dedicated software I need for work runs on Windows only). It should be cheaper for me to have a fully licensed version of XP/Vista/whaterever than to buy a laptop with it installed.

Hadn't heard of it, though I had heard of wine, which sounded cool yet scary....we'll see, as I'll ditch XP in a second if it works.
**UPDATE** the answer is probably not, certainly not off the original install of X-Over or X-Over Games. Need to try winetricks.

Here YUGO
As for damage models, this vid will show you the extent of it. Not the very best, but good enough for me.

Re: I've been cheating on you
I have a legal copy of XP Home OEM on my MacBook. I could virtualize it, call MS, get it reactivated, then transfer to the Mac Pro as a virtual machine (breaking the EULA, but whatever). But, it's a non-starter for bootcamp (even if I can convince MS that my MacBook's motherboard broke and the replacement has two Xeons on it...), as XP Home only supports one CPU.

yeah, I remember that I found this as well. I should have clarified. As I cannot buy in the US Amazon store, I was searching in the UK store for a non-OEM, full version. Couldn't find it last time I searched (a year ago). I'm certainly not going to buy a French version....
